Headteacher Application Guide

What Headteacher panels look for — vision, school improvement, governance, financial leadership — with worked evidence.

**TL;DR.** Headteacher applications are assessed by governors often alongside external consultants. Panels expect strategic vision grounded in track record, school improvement leadership with measurable outcomes, governance and financial leadership, and safeguarding as DSL.

What panels look for

  • Strategic vision evidenced by track record, not asserted
  • School improvement with Ofsted progression
  • Financial leadership (typical budget £2m–£10m primary; £5m–£40m secondary)
  • Governance engagement
  • Safeguarding leadership (DSL accountability)
  • Community and parental engagement

Worked paragraph (aspiring primary Head, 250 words)

*School improvement leadership (essential).* As acting Head at my current 280-pupil primary for 8 months during the substantive Head's career break, I led the school through a Section 8 Ofsted inspection following the 2023 Requires Improvement rating. I inherited three priority areas: inconsistent teaching quality, low Year 6 progress scores, and weak SEN provision. I led structured intervention: fortnightly teaching audits with the Deputy Head and developmental feedback for three teachers on structured improvement plans; a Year 6 writing moderation process embedded across KS2; and a SENDCO-led redesign of SEND provision with whole-staff INSET on adaptive teaching. The Section 8 in March 2025 judged all three priority areas as Good and the school was rated Good overall — moving from Requires Improvement at the first opportunity. I continued substantive deputy leadership on the Head's return and am now applying for a permanent headship. This experience gave me direct evidence of leading whole-school turnaround, personal accountability to governors and to Ofsted, and outcomes measurable at inspection.

Frequently asked questions

What qualifications do Headteachers need?

QTS and typically the National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH) or equivalent. Some academies accept leaders without NPQH but it is strongly preferred. Specific Academy Trusts may add their own leadership development requirements.
